1. I think the lack of politics was threefold: the war started close enough to the telecast that rewriting jokes wasn’t possible, there’s a legit fear of retaliation from the Trump Regime and studios terrified of the Trump Regime, and a general feeling that Hollywood types talking about politics is actually counterproductive.

2. I thought the funniest Trump joke was Conan’s, “welcome back to the Has-a-small-penis theater. There, let’s see him put his name in front of THAT one!”

3. Conan has a rare inherent decency that makes him able to say something like his earnest belief in cooperation via creativity that doesn’t make my eyes roll back in my head so hard I can see the back of my skull

4. I thought the Oscars mostly got it right. I personally would have voted for del Toro and Byrne, but I’m not mad about who won.

5. Holy shit, how charming is GDT?! Frank got nominated for best screenplay? There were some good things about that movie. The script wasn’t one of them.

His riff on F1 being followed by CAPS LOCK had me stupid cackling.

My 11 year old was sitting on the couch, on his phone of course, but looked up briefly to see the Conan bit where he went "side-by-side" with a video of a video game train jumping. I got a laugh when he says “oh hey, Subway Surfers!” and then immediately went back to the phone.

- I always feel like it's nice, but not a requirement, for celebrities and awards shows to make political statements. I thought last night was a fine balance. I assume they didn't ask Mark Ruffalo to present, and Javier took the Strong Statement slot.

- It was hilarious that the Academy spent all of Saturday posting pics from the rehearsal. What did they rehearse?! Nothing landed unless Conan (who should be the permanent host) was involved. I saw a clip from the audience of Sterling trying to find his way offstage after the Casablanca bit that's ten times funnier than what RDJ and Chris Evans were doing at the same time.

- The sound mix AND the editing were off. The camera guy was not ready for the Leo bit in the opening monologue, we had at least two shots of Conan waiting for his cue, and I didn't know Shaboozey was on stage for the Sinners number until he had already sung.

- Hard to complain about the winners. The two best movies of the year were the front runners and all the acting winners were either my picks, or good alternates. Nice that the first Casting winner wasn't just The Movie With The Most Famous People.

- Clip from Lawnmower Man during that vertical screen bit!

- Since we must always re-litigate past wins, Nicole and Ewan presenting Best Picture is a reminder that Moulin Rouge should have won Best Picture in 2001. When is the last time you thought about A Beautiful Mind? (The other nominees that year were Gosford Park (eh), In The Bedroom (good, but not a BP), and Fellowship of the Ring (OK, I'll give them that one))

I think of A Beautiful Mind about as often as I think of the 2001 remake of Moulin Rouge, which is to say not very often. They're both fine movies, I'd say.

But yeah, the sound was atrocious. I don't know about those in the building, but the only time I heard Matt Berry was when he did his bit with Conan. What's the point of having a celeb announcer if those at home can't hear them?

I know the scripted "bits" are always underwhelming, but my whelms ended up in the earth's core this year, and I only saw the final hour.

Everything that wasn't Conan tanked so hard.

Hopefully all the sketches end up online. I actually laughed out loud during the final Lockjaw one ("GOT CRABS?") which is a rare event these days

Did they film nine others in case something else won? Well, eight others, anyway. (F1 just glad to be invited to the party.)
