I lol'd at "Push" being strummed on the beach, but the musical cue highlight for me was when they first got to Kendom.

It's not the full song by itself, but "Butterfly" by Crazy Town was worked into whatever was playing in the background and it *killed* me.

Dammit, I totally missed that and I'm so angry.

It’s when Ken is explaining the patriarchy. Lost my goddam mind to the point I thought I was hallucinating

Glad I’m not the only one who feels that way about Idiocracy. It’s got some great bits but as a movie, it’s not very good.

It's the most memorable not-great movie of all time.

Upgrade/ double dose of this pimpin etc…. It’s the only time/ movie/ anything where dorky white dude doing the black thing was funny and not cringey. No idea why to this day but it worked and was sincere

I’m not going to lie: I teared up a few times and the Rhea Pearlman cameo was when the tears fell. But I died at the Godfather part

Expand full comment

Yes, I also found that rather effective. I wondered if those were new dad tears.

I teared up at that part, at the part where Barbie tells the older woman that she was beautiful, and the monologue from America Ferrera. I know everyone is kind of rolling their eyes at it and that’s fine. I’m basic.

No one writes better elegant funny heartfelt reviews for the common man. Now onto Armond whites….bless you Vincent.

The point of this comment is not to shit on Amy Schumer, but I don't think this movie would have been as big with the original plan.

I love Amy Schumer but I agree, I feel like that would've been terrible.

I don’t love Amy Schumer and I agree!

It's telling as to the vagaries of fate and hundred million dollar investments. There was about an 18 month spell when the "prevailing wisdom" was that AS was a SuperStar and would make this movie huge.

The movie is equal parts brilliant and dumb. I adore it.

Pretty much felt the same - fine to eh when it's addressing FEMINISM, hilarious and near-perfect when it's a weirdo comedy with A+ production design. Even though the stuff with Will Ferrell and the C-Suite felt superfluous, it had my favorite line (the podcast hosted by two trees) and a Playtime nod for the film nerds. Can we get Greta to direct a musical next?

Really enjoyed this movie. I kinda felt like America’s monologue and moments like that were the most targeted at very young women. It’s semi-odd coming from a character like her who has lived in the real world for a long time but it works as an epiphany for Barbie who doesn’t understand any of this and could help young people in the audience understand the very basic aspects of feminism.

But yeah my big takeaway from this movie is that it was just really funny. Gerwig just has incredible instincts and Robbie and Gosling are perfect, as advertised.

The only part that missed for me was Ferrell as CEO, but that's because it felt like one of the few places Mattel put its foot down to say "if you're making fun of our CEO, it's going to be in a way that makes him lovable rather than evil"

This movie made me more interested in watching White Noise finally. Marriage Story was just so hard to move past.

(Please don’t tell me about the “rightwing backlash,” which seems to accompany every marketing campaign these days, it’s as boring as it is overhyped).

Fucking thank you. The culture wars just get worse and worse. If I don't think I'll like a movie's politics or whatever, I just won't watch it. Half of the "outrage" functions as marketing for the movie, the other half serves social media grifters. All of it is a waste of time.

"Whaaaat, you mean to tell me the constipated elfling who bitches about everything in his unlistenable voice was bitching about this thing? Why, I absolutely MUST read 1200 words about it."

“Ben Shapiro missed the point of Barbie because Ben Shapiro was emotionally stunted by not getting a job on the good wife” is the thing I hate knowing the most

Expand full comment

Yeah I could not get the image of Shapiro out of my head when I read this line in your review.

There's a really twisted symbiotic relationship between some culture warriors. They need each to generate controversy so that they can respond to it.

"This is the existential crisis that will drive Barbie to escape Barbieworld, travel to the real world to discover the patriarchy, and return to Barbieworld to try to rescue it from mansplaining and the male gaze in Greta Gerwig’s new Barbie movie."

Well, I'm sold. *wank wank* Figured the puke emjoi would be too dismissive.

I'm done with culture war movies. This was never for me just like the little mermaid movie wasn't. I'll be laughing at both while drinking a bud light, anyone that doesn't like it can kiss my balls.

I mean I'm describing the elevator pitch, the point of the review is a lot more and a lot better than that.

Well I'm OhMyBalls, getting controversial

Won't watch Little Mermaid, it's too commercial

And I sure as hell won't go watch Barbie

Guess I'll stay at home and drink my own pee

Jk jk. I don't really even watch movies that much anymore, I just like reading Vince's takes.

Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine? Of course not. But I do it because it's sterile and I like the taste.

You not watching movies anymore bums me out. A man cannot subsist on schnitzel alone, my friend.
