I wanted Strong to win, because he takes himself SO seriously and you can tell he's been seething watching his former co-star (who I don't get a sense he has a great relationship with) beat him and do that faux-unprepared "isn't this all such a hoot and a big in-joke?" schtick from the podium all awards season.
Wow that's Meta and I didn't even think about it like that! Lol. Do you think Jeremy Strong was saying to himself " [but] I'm the eldest boy!!" when Culkin won?
Honestly though, RDJ's story about Strong sleeping in the bleachers was very cool. Made it from the bottom...
Quite the come back for Brody. It seems like a year ago he was appearing in some Nic Cage(I love him, shut up.) level rubbish and now he's got a best actor. Neat.
Yup, he kinda got overshadowed by Demi, but he was the other comeback story of the night. Look up the trailer for inAPPropriate Comedy to see what he was up to a decade ago. Or don't.
Pretty good Oscars, I thought! Good ceremony, mostly good winners. Random thoughts:
- Hosting the Oscars is a thankless job, and while they're mostly there to keep the train on the tracks, it is nice when they're better than average, as Conan was. I often think about that interview Kimmel did last year where he said he made a Moonlight joke, and it was immediately clear that no one in the room had seen it.
- Maybe the strongest opening for the Oscars in a decade, going from Cynthia/Ariana to Conan to Kieran.
- I'm sad Demi didn't win, but hard to complain about Mikey, much like Lily/Emma. I was also a victim of the Hulu cutout, but I had my antenna as a backup, so I switched over right when Mikey was walking up.
- Zoe and Paul Tazewell (the FIRST BLACK MAN to win Costume Design?!?! How?!) were the standout speeches. I felt like Adrian had a point and then lost it, but I enjoyed the rambling weirdness.
- Glad The Brutalist won Cinematography, but it's hard to get excited about that category when Nickel Boys wasn't even nominated.
- I cracked up at the Supporting Actors getting effusive praise from the presenters (let Da'Vine present everything), and then the Actors getting clips. Karla fundamentally changed the ceremony. Good for her, since she'll never be back.
- Not a lot of standout fashions. My favorites were Halle Berry and Colman Domingo, who's probably going to win Supporting Actor for Joe Jackson or Actor for Nat King Cole, even though he should have won this year.
- Weird lack of upcoming movie trailers during the commercial breaks. The only ones I recall are The Amateur and that Ana De Armas John Wick sidequel.
The Adrian Brody speech was insane. Big balls the orchestra - "Knock it off, I've been here before! I won't be egregious" and then immediately starts basically going "ummm, ok, what else... pfff, let's see... bapbapba..." Hilarious.
That Best Original Score guy looked like he got hatched from his pod 15 minutes before going up on stage. (Wild that the Challengers score wasn't nominated)
That bit about What's-her-face being played by Bill Skarsgard was pretty good.
And if I had to pick something that I'd say was the theme of the night, it was Timothee Chalomet officially joining the club - lots of good natured hazing basically the entire time. Not only from Conan and then Sandler early on, but pretty well the whole time. The shots were pretty harmless and he seemed to be the right amount of Aw Shucks about it. Kylie Jenner could have looked a bit less bored with the whole thing (and maybe faked a few extra IQ points) seeing as it was her boyfriend and all who was joining the Edrenochrome Elites Club.
Morgan Freeman's Gene Hackman speech was great. I hope it was sincere as it felt.
Full disclosure: the doctor I worked for when I first moved to LA from Virginia is Kylie’s OBGYN (which is public knowledge so I’m allowed to say that) and I have a soft spot for her. She was kind and polite in an authentic way and was gracious in a way that, considering who her parents are, seemed like a goddamn miracle.
I question the sanity of anyone who would willingly put themselves in the Kardashian orbit. I couldn't watch 8 seconds of their show without wanting to nuke Calabasas from space.
I have to be honest here: I have never heard red scare and I have no idea what they sound like. But based on third-hand discussions of them that seems right.
No mention of that horribly awkward moment with Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn? I cringed and puked at the same time... and all for best Animated feature? I couldn't tell if it was a bit, then they announced the award and I was truly shocked by the whole thing.
I haven't seen all the BP noms but something tells me I will like Im Still Here the best. Anora just wasn't that good of a movie to me - it was good don't get me wrong, just not that great. It's first third-half was largely devoid of emotion and the last half couldn't make up for it. That all and the main Rooskey had no arc - he was a child at the start and all the way through.
I agreed with the show's sentiment about movie theaters dying and how we need to keep them alive... How about HillyWould gets their heads out of their assholes and stops pumping out Marvel movies so we actually have interesting movies to go see. Last year was mostly a meh year for cinema and I don't see the upside of Anora on a big screen tb frank. That its director said he'd keep making movies for the theater - wtf does that even mean bruh?
Lastly, that Nosferstu wasn't nominated for best picture just sums it all up... Not a bad show all things told (the musical performances were great!) - just nice and did what it should. I echo Aran(man)cini's point about Zoe Saladana's speech. That was legendary - Culkin's was great too but less replay ability there.

Kinda weird, but i guess weird in the way I expect the Oscars to be?
I'm not sure everyone's ever going to go back to theaters at this point. The theaters have done little to make the experience more enjoyable. Like so many other industries, it's just being maximized for short-term profits, and that's it. They cut staff at these places to the point where projectionists are working multiple movies at once, there's just a bunch of people at the concession counter but that's it. A skeleton crew. The prices for candy and drinks keep going up, too. They're not even trying to retain customers anymore.
Haven't been this happily surprised about a Best Picture winner since Parasite won. Anora really was that good. There's some visual backlash to it on Twitter right now, but meh no other movie last year stuck with me more than this did. Plus did everyone forget how funny it was too?
To each their own but I'm in a different universe on this one. Parasite was better than Anora in every way imo and putting them in the same sentence is borderline criminal, lol.
But we both got Mickey 17 to look forward to! (claws his way to common ground after dig 😄)
Roman Roy beating Kendall and using it as an opportunity to win a sex bet was a low key banger tbh

I like to pretend Wicked is actually about those water-resistant outfits bicyclists wear.
Does this mean Leno is going to try to be host next year?

I did and it looked like dogshit. Thank you?

I’m aware of your hatred of monotone vocal fry. It’s one of the many reasons you (justifiably!) hate Red Scare.
I have to be honest here: I have never heard red scare and I have no idea what they sound like. But based on third-hand discussions of them that seems right.
The feeling of jealous I had of you having never heard those terminally boring hags reminds me the parasocial relationship is a funny thing
Well that's nice to hear. It seems like an against all odds type of situation.
That being said, Kylie's OBGYN has got to be in the running as the most sought after job on planet Earth.
The doctor was amazing. She would have been incredibly successful no matter what she did. She’s also model gorgeous
Be careful - you're going to have Schnitzel Bob writing fan fic about them...
My favorite moment: the Conan (host) vs. Offermann (announcer) gag
My least favorite: the Conan (host) vs. Offermann (announcer) gag because they stopped it right when it was starting to get really funny
Stopping the bit with Offerman and Conan was the only time it felt like Conan’s sensibilities were penned in at all.
Respectively? (Reversed?)
Nomadland made more than $15m!? Jesus.
$39.5

And I forgot to mention Culkin's speech, that was an oversight, I liked that one too.

It felt like something he could have told her backstage, but instead, we all had to hear it. What a dork.
