When Jerry Springer died, someone on Twitter said the show was like a release valve - if everyone could watch various insane people vent their problems/watch Black people throw chairs at KKK members on TV at 3pm on a weekday, you could process those thoughts collectively, and carry on with your life. Now, everyone (me included) is just shouting into a void on the social media of their choosing.
Plus, ya know, we always have enough money to kill people, but never enough to help people. I heard that for the first time in a talking head in Sicko, the Michael Moore doc from 2007. Not much has changed.
